Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FLV format and why was it so widely used?

FLV (Flash Video) was the dominant video format for web streaming from roughly 2005 to 2015. It was the format behind YouTube, Vimeo, and virtually every embedded web video player that ran on Adobe Flash Player. If you have old FLV files, they are almost certainly from this era of web video.

Why won't my FLV files play in a browser anymore?

Adobe officially ended Flash Player support in December 2020, and all major browsers removed Flash entirely. FLV files depended on Flash Player for playback, so they no longer work in any modern browser. Converting to MP4 restores playback everywhere.

I have archived website videos in FLV format. How do I convert them?

Drag your FLV files into Diwadi, select MP4 as the output format, and click convert. Diwadi handles FLV files from old websites, CMS backups, and archived content. You can drop entire folders to batch convert hundreds of files at once.

Does converting FLV to MP4 lose video quality?

With Diwadi's default 'Keep Original' quality setting, the conversion re-encodes the video at a quality level that is visually indistinguishable from the original. FLV files were typically low to medium resolution anyway, so the MP4 output will look identical to the source.

I found old FLV files on a backup hard drive. Can I still convert them?

Yes. As long as the FLV files are not corrupted, Diwadi can convert them regardless of age. FLV files from old hard drives, USB sticks, DVDs, or archived folders all work. Just drag them in and convert to MP4.

What codecs do FLV files use, and does Diwadi support them?

FLV files typically use Sorenson Spark (H.263), VP6, or H.264 for video, and MP3 or AAC for audio. Diwadi supports all of these codecs and will convert them to standard H.264/AAC MP4 files that play on every modern device.

Can I batch convert a whole folder of old FLV downloads?

Yes. Drag an entire folder of FLV files into Diwadi and it will convert all of them to MP4. There is no file limit. Hardware acceleration uses your GPU to speed up conversion by 5-20x, so even large collections convert quickly.

I have FLV files from old webcam recordings and screen captures. Will they convert?

Yes. FLV was a common output format for early webcam software, screen recorders like CamStudio, and streaming tools. Diwadi converts these files to MP4 regardless of the original recording source or resolution.

Why are my FLV files so much smaller than other video files?

FLV files from the early web era were heavily compressed to work with slow internet connections. They were typically 320x240 or 480p resolution with aggressive compression. The resulting MP4 files will be similarly small since the source quality determines the output size.

Can I upload converted FLV files to YouTube or social media?

Yes. Once converted to MP4, your old FLV videos can be uploaded to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, or any platform that accepts video. MP4 with H.264 is the universal standard that every platform supports.
